Sonora - Virginia City

Sunday 11th May - Happy Mother's Day

After breakfast (oatmeal again woohoo) we leave the hotel and my coms has died AGAIN!!! not happy Jan!
We ride to Big Trees State Park and they want a $10 entry fee but as we just want to get off the bike and stretch we ask can we just park and stretch and they are OK with that.

Next we want to stop at Lake Apine Lodge for coffee but when we arrive they are closed so we head back to Bear Valley Lodge (it's open through the winter so open today)  At Bear Valley we get chatting to Diane who tells us that Lake Alpine doesn't open till May 31st.

Ebbets Pass is a very narrow, very winding road that has a lot of snow on the sides and some encroaching on the road in sections it is really taxing getting up and over.  We have lunch in a small town called Markleeville at a place called Ali's Cafe it's a really cute place.  We share a BBQ pulled pork sandwich which is actually a hamburger type bun with a spicy tomatoey pork filling served with salsa and corn chips and then we share a dessert burrito (apple with ice cream) yummo it is more than enough food for both of us.  We then drive to South Lake Tahoe very, very pretty.  And then make our way to Virginia City.  We arrive at our hotel at around 4:30pm and Linda welcomes us, our room is so sweet they call it the Immigrants room it's kind of a shrine to all the immigrants that have come to Virginia City, it is decorated with different items from all over the world.

We head downtown to find some food for dinner and find ourselves in the middle of a chilli cook off but like the rodeo in Sonora we have arrived a little late.  Dave was disappointed he wanted a Simpson's moment LOL

We look at all the old buildings, there are MANY Saloons and find a nice restaurant for dinner.  Our server, Sunshine gets us a beer while we look at the menu, there is a Mother's Day special 16oz Porterhouse served with salad, mashed potato and gravy.....I don't realize till David points out that it's a whole pound of steak!!!! so we share again and it's a perfect amount of food.  Skyped with Jen again was so lovely. And skyped with Mum and Dad so good to see them both.

our lunch stop in Markleeville

back in Nevada
