Alcatraz

Wednesday 14th May

This morning we walked from our hotel to Pier 33 to board the ferry for Alcatraz (about 5km) a beautiful orning for a walk.  Our ferry left at 9:10am and it's just a short ride over to the Island.  I know it's just another prison but it's terribly fascinating.  We take the self-guided audio tour it's really informative and there are former prisoners as narrators and former guards.  After the tour we look around the island and check out both the officers garden and the prisoners garden.  We meet quite a few Aussies on the island.  There is no eating or drinking on the island (only down on the dock) only water and no smoking which is great!!!  On the ferry on the way back to the city we bought sandwiches at the snack bar and wanted to sit at one of the tables, we notice a man sitting by himself and ask if we might share the table, his name is Andrew and he's from Melbourne soon his wife Monica joins us and we have a nice chat as the ferry goes back to SF.  We catch a local bus back to close to our hotel.

When we arrive at the hotel office our package has arrived.  Such great service from Bit Wave (Uclear).  Our plan is to ride over to San Leandro to buy David a backrest for the bike and having a working coms unit makes it so much easier.  We found the office really easily and they were so excited to have some Aussies visiting.  David attaches the backrest to the bike and we are set.  We ride a little way down the road to find somewhere to have a break.  We find a Safeway and buy microwavable meals for dinner.  We had planned to catch the tourist bus to the Northern side of the bridge and run back to our hotel but by the time we navigated our way back to the hotel without GPS it's 5:30pm so we change our minds and walk to the bridge and run to the northern side and back down onto the waterfront.  We end up walking 8km and running about 8km.  On the way back to the hotel we buy two long necks and some gatorade.  While I have a shower David goes up to the laundromat to put our washing on and then comes back and I make dinner LOL our meals are quite tasty and the long necks go down a treat!  he then headed back up to the laundromat to dry the washing and I paint my nails and download photos.
